I
wish to sincerely thank our previous Board of Trustees.
They have rendered excellent service and it has been both
a privilege and a pleasure to work with them during their
three year term. I have learned a tremendous amount from
them and wish to publicly thank them for giving me the opportunity
to be the Principal of Forest View High School. It is a
privilege to be the Principal of this school and I look
forward to working with the new Board to strengthen our
schools ability to deliver quality learning outcomes to
our students.

CHARTER GOALS AND 16 JUNE TEACHER PARENT EVENING
School
charters are required to include student achievement improvement
targets that the Board of Trustees is expected to report
back to the Ministry of Education as part of the following
year’s school charter. The Board of Trustees has set
the following two goals for 2010.
2010 Charter Goal 1: At least 80% of students in NCEA classes
will gain a minimum achieved grade in standards that sum
to at least 15 credits. This will apply to NCEA classes
that offer standards that sum to at least 15 credits.
NCEA Level 1 requires a student to achieve at least 80 credits
at level 1 or above. Eight of the credits must be in numeracy
(mathematics) and eight of the credit must be in literacy
(English of Te Reo). NCEA Level 2 and NCEA Level 3 are also
80 credit certificates. 60 of the 80 credits are required
to be at the level of the certificate or above. The School
catchphrase “15 Up,” is about each student and
teacher focussing on achieving a minimum of 15 credits in
each NCEA subject that offers at least 15 credits. Achieving
this goal will improve the likelihood of a student achieving
the NCEA certificate that they are pursuing.
As you prepare for the teacher parent Report Evening for
year 11 to year 13 on 16th June it would be a good idea
to question your son or daughter about the amount of credits
that they have achieved in each of their subjects. Your
son or daughter will have a course outline for each of their
subjects which will inform them about the number of credits
that are offered in a particular subject and also the timing
of these assessments. I encourage you to ask them to see
these course outlines and to discuss their progress with
the learning and assessments that are listed. Your son or
daughter should also have a brick wall which is a Forest
View High school tool that assists students keep track of
the number of credits that they have achieved. Please ask
your son or daughter to also sight these brick walls. You
will be able to follow this discussion up with their teachers
at the June 16 parent interview evening. School reports
for Year 11 to Year 13 students will be mailed to parents
on 11th June.
2010
Charter Goal 1: To increase the percentage of Forest View
High School leavers who are of Maori descent that achieve
NCEA Level 2 or above to at least 55%.
The
Forest View High School Board of Trustees has set this student
achievement improvement goal to address the variation that
exists within the school between Maori and Non Maori NCEA
achievement. This is a national challenge which the government
expects all schools to respond to. It is envisaged that
the 15 Up school catchphrase with support and monitoring
will over time improve the achievement levels of all Forest
View High School students. Level two has been selected because
research identifies that this is a minimum qualification
that students should achieve. The research clearly identifies
a difference in the income levels of students who at least
achieve NCEA Level 2 and students who do not achieve NCEA
Level 2. The school’s involvement in Te Kotahitanga,
is a key lever in achieving the above goals.
