JUNIOR
EXTENSION WRITING
Teachers select a small number of junior students to participate
in an Extension Writing Workshop. Students are given one
on one coaching to enhance their creative and formal writing
skills. Students learn to be more analytical and critical
of their own writing, which will help them improve their
writing technique.
JUNIOR/SENIOR
DEBATING
Students
who are strong speakers may audition and be selected to
be in the Junior or Senior Debating Teams. There are usually
4 students on each team, 3 speakers and a reserve. Debating
Teams compete in the Freemason’s debate yearly. It
is a competition between the local secondary schools: Tokoroa
High School, Putaruru College and Matamata College. Teams
also compete against Rotorua Lakes High School during the
Academic Exchange held yearly. Debating Workshops have been
organised for all students who are interested. The workshop
provides opportunities for students to gain and practise
debating skills.
ACADEMIC
EXCHANGE
The Academic
Exchange is a competition between Forest View High School
and Rotorua Lakes High School. It occurs once a year and
is held alternatively in Rotorua then Tokoroa. Teachers
select students to participate in various teams such as
General Knowledge, Social Science, Science, Mathematics,
Art, Music and Debating. Students who excel in English may
be selected to be in the General Knowledge or Debating Teams.
VISITING
WRITERS WORKSHOP
The Library
and English Department have organised popular New Zealand
writers to visit and conduct a workshop with specially selected
students. Students may be invited to attend the workshops.
Students should pay attention to the school notices to learn
when the workshops will be held.
FUTURE
PROBLEM SOLVING
Future
Problem Solving (FPS) is when students read about imaginative
futuristic scene, work out problems that could arise in
the scene, come up with solutions to the main problem and
then write out an action plan to overcome the main problem.
Students work in groups of four, improve their thinking
skills and complete booklets to participate in the Future
Problem Solving National Competition. The time commitment
required is about 3 hours twice a term. Students who are
interested in joining FPS need to pay attention to the school
notices at the beginning of the year to learn when the enrolment
period starts. Students may try out a session and then decide
whether FPS is for them.
