Forest
View cares about its students and has systems and processes
that are designed to help them make good choices:
Every
student keeps the same Tutor and Dean from Year 9 through
to Year 13
Senior
students act as Peer Support Leaders for the incoming
Year 9 student
There
is a school wide behaviour code that all students are
expected to follow
There
is a structured and thorough system to check attendance
Personal
guidance and support is available through the Guidance
Counsellor who is a member of the NZ Association of Counsellors
The Public Health Nurse and GP clinics are available to
students
Weekly
Specialist drug and alcohol counselling is available
The Resource Teacher Learning Behaviour (RTLB)
can be asked to become involved with students whose learning
behaviour needs to change
Our
well-resourced Careers department and the Deans give professional
advice on subjects and qualifications. The Careers Teacher
and Guidance Counsellor attend information refresher courses
annually so they give our students current information and
advice
We operate
the Gateway programme that provides a link with local industries
and employers that open up employment opportunities to senior
students
STUDENT
LEADERSHIP
The
importance of developing leadership skills is recognised
at Forest View and students are given opportunities throughout
their time at school to become leaders. These include:
Sports
captains
Umpires
(training and coaching is given)
Members of their Lake (House) council
Lake
Leaders
Peer
Support Leaders
Peer
Mediators
School
Council members (this council operates several sub-committees)
School
Librarians
Senior
School Leaders (Head students)
Leadership
roles develop confidence and independence and allow students
to develop the necessary abilities to be able to participate
fully in society later in their lives.
COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS
Open
and honest two-way communication between school and parents
is of vital importance for both parties. For a school to
enable students to make the most of their time while being
educated there are three elements, willing students,
good teachers and supportive and
involved parents. We make regular contact with
parents via:
A school newsletter every 3 weeks
A
phone call if a student is away unexpectedly
One
progress and two full reports every year
A
meet the teacher evening for all parents of Year 9 students
Parents’
evenings after each formal report is issued, and after
the progress report
A
free Diary for every student so homework can be recorded
and checked
The
school operates an ‘Open Door’
policy. This means that the Principal, Senior Management
and all teachers are willing to meet with parents if they
have a concern about their child.
An appointment
will ensure that the person you wish to speak to is available.
